âWhat?â James leapt off the sofa, throwing water in every direction.
âHey, watch it!â Roger pulled out a paper towel and dabbed puddles of water off his papers.
âCanât you stop her? Talk her out of it?â
âYeah. There is one way,â Roger said with hesitation. He grabbed a handful of wet papers and shook them out. âYou got water all over these contracts.â
âWhat way?â
âIâll tell you.â Roger smoothed out the typed contracts on his desk. âBut youâre not going to like it.â
âSpill it, already. Iâll do anything.â
âSheryl wants you to get a job.â Roger leaned on the corner of his desk.
âIâve got a job. Iâm going to detective school.â
âYou got thrown out, remember?â
âTemporarily. And Iâve already got a paying client.â
âYouâll be tossed out of school permanently if youâre arrested for murder. Plus, I doubt Kourtney and Dale Rain will be paying you for your services if youâre the one charged with killing their dad. Kids can be funny about things like that.â
Roger was clearly enjoying himself. âBesides, Sheryl wants you to get a real job.â
âA real job? Where am I going to get a real job at this point?â His resumé, lousy to begin with, had been made worse by this whole murder thing. What could he list as his last position of note: Finder of dead body?
âJames, Iâm glad you asked.â Roger draped an arm over Jamesâ neck and dragged him behind the desk. He slid open a two-drawer oak cabinet.
James watched warily as Roger pulled out three light blue polo shirts and three khaki-colored pairs of cuffed slacks. Each piece was new, wrapped in clear plastic.
And hideous to behold.
Roger dropped the pile of clothes in Jamesâ hands.
âWhatâs all this?â James eyed the geeky clothing.
âI almost forgot.â Roger grabbed a covered hanger from the brass rack and unzipped it. âYour new blazer.â
Jamesâ mouth fell open. The blazer and the clothes were identical to his brotherâs. âYou donât meanââ
Roger flashed a victory smile. âSheryl wants you to work here.â He held out his hand. âWelcome to Stewart Classic Motors, James.â
âOh, no. You canât be serious.â James dropped the pile of clothes on Rogerâs desk. âThis is a joke, right? Youâre putting me on.â
Roger pulled out his smartphone and offered it to James. âYou want to call Sheryl? Ask her to verify?â
âYou think I wonât?â James snatched the phone from Roger and speed-dialed his sister-in-law. His brother was lying. Conning him.
âHello, Sheryl? Itâs me, James. Rogerâs been feeding me a bunch of garbage about how youâre going to charge me with murder if I donâtââ James winced. âYeah, butââ He tugged at his collar. âSure, but you see Iââ
Roger smirked as Sheryl continued talking and Jamesâ face grew whiter and whiter. For Roger, it was nice, very nice not to be on the receiving end of Sherylâs wrath for once.
After a minute during which his brotherâs complexion and demeanor had changed from that of a cocksure wannabe PI to that of a day-old corpse, James handed Roger back the smartphone.
Roger said goodbye to
